Premature Ovarian Failure/Insufficiency (POF) (POI)
Loss of normal ovarian function before age 40.
Signs and Symptoms:
- Amenorrhea or irregular cycles
- Hot flashes
- Vaginal dryness
- Infertility
Pathophysiology: Genetic, autoimmune, or idiopathic damage to ovarian follicles leads to hypoestrogenism and elevated FSH.
Diagnosis & Functional Tests
- High FSH, low estradiol on 2 occasions 6 weeks apart
- Comprehensive hormonal assessment
- Anti-ovarian antibodies
