Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
PCOS is a common metabolic and endocrine disorder affecting 10-20 % of women of reproductive age. It presents with menstrual irregularities, hyperandrogenism, and polycystic ovaries.
Signs and Symptoms:
- Irregular or absent periods
- Acne, oily skin
- Hirsutism (facial/body hair)
- Weight gain, especially abdominal (but almost half of the patients are not obese)
- Infertility
- Mood disorders
- Increased lipids
- Insulin resistance
Pathophysiology: Specific cause of PCOS remains unknown but genetics and lifestyle/environmental factors contribute. In
Insulin resistance leads to hyperinsulinemia, which increases ovarian androgen production. Excess androgens impair follicular maturation, causing anovulation and cyst formation.
